8 Free CSS/HTML Templates

While browsing through my webdesign RSS Feeds today (you know how it happens, jumping from site to site), I stumbled upon a very nice resource.

ChocoTemplates is a freebies site that offers free CSS templates for download, under the Creative Commons 3.0 License.

As I’m writing this, they currently offer 16 free templates, but I’ll only cover 8 which have caught my attention. You can see all their templates here.

1. Portfolio 6 (Aqua Style)

Portfolio 6 is a cool a one page CSS portfolio template with nice jQuery animations and some unique graphics. You’ve probably seen this type of design in many CSS Galleries, but honestly I haven’t come across any site that actually gives something like this for free

2. Portal 5 (Magazine Style)

Portal 5 is a straightforward magazine style CSS template which could easily be ported to WordPress for example (since a static template is kinda useless if you want to create a portal).
I mentioned WordPress particulary because, as you can see, the template has that sidebar that you can see on almost every WordPress magazine theme. But since it’s just CSS and HTML, it can be coded for any CMS, not just WordPress.

3. Personal 1

Personal 1 is a CSS template best suited for photographers or portfolios. It comes with a nice jQuery image slider for the front page, and the thumbnails on top suggest you could implement a stylesheet switcher that changes the background color of the site (either on hover or on click).

4. Portfolio 3 (Wooden Style)

This is another free one page portfolio CSS template, this time with a wood theme and a very nice jQuery animated shelf to present your work.

5. Corporate 2 (Business Template)

Corporate 2 is a 3 column business-style CSS template. No special effects here, just a clean business site (isn’t that how business sites should look? )

6. Portal 2 (Auto blog style)

Another portal/magazine style CSS template, this time for the auto fans
Note: this kind of magazine style templates should only be your framework. You need to port it to a CMS in case you want to run a blog/portal based on this kind of templates.

7. Portfolio 2

A very nice portfolio template. As with most portfolio designs, it features a jQuery slider to showcase featured works. I really like the effect achieved with the moon and stars in the header

8. GUI 2 (Admin template)

GUI 2 is an admin skin, which means it’s used for skinning the back-end of web applications. However, if you don’t need something like this, it’s always good to look at how it was created and learn certain thing (for example, the menu or how to create those info boxes with CSS and HTML).

Wrap up

I would have really loved to see the PSD files available as well. Or perhaps more page templates, since every template only comes with one page design – but hey, these are free and you can’t really ask for more when someone works to give something away just like this
